About Matthew Kirby

Matthew Kirby is an artist and art instructor living in Bowling Green, KY. 

“My paintings evoke the concept of searching for deeper meaning, both through the actions of the figures portrayed and the application of paint. I access a wide variety of subjects in a multi-layered approach that create situations in which images are detached from their original function to emphasize ambiguous relationships. Also, by applying specific combinations to the arrangement of figures and landscapes, these compositions create new narratives and contexts for the displaced images. My work is a reflection upon the history of paintings and use forms and ideas that consolidate with my personal system of beliefs. I continue to investigate with painting the ways in which the figures in my work are searching, often with the result of unmet expectations.”
